What is the Difference between Urban Design, Architecture and Civil Engineering
Town planning is very important aspect of our society. Properly planned town improve living standards and play a very important role in well being of the residents. Urban design, architecture and civil engineering are some commonly used terms in this regard. All these are different, but a common man cannot differentiate them. Here are some basic differences between them.
Urban design
Complete process of designing cities, town or villages is called as urban design. Instead of focusing on individual buildings, urban design focuses on large scale of buildings, streets and other public places. The main purpose of urban design is to make urban areas not only attractive and functional but sustainable also. It is a broad field and involves many other disciplines as well, like civil engineers, urban planners and architectures.
Architecture
Architecture has two aspects; it not only involves process of planning and designing but also construction of buildings. Architecture plays a very important role in any society. We can recognize old civilizations by their architecture. In other words, the term architecture is used for describing infrastructure and buildings. Architecture deals with planning of space, social, environmental and aesthetic aspects of the buildings. Cost estimation is also an important aspect of architecture. It deals with the structure and overall behavior of the building for many years to come.
Civil Engineering
A discipline which deals with the design, construction and maintenance of physical structure like roads, bridges, dams, canal and other buildings, is called as civil engineering. It is one of the oldest engineering disciplines. It is sub divided into structural engineering, transportation engineering and urban engineering. Civil engineering is involves in all kinds of buildings on all levels, in public sector, national and international levels.
Urban Design vs Architecture vs Civil Engineering
Urban design is an umbrella term. It involves architecture and civil engineering. Architecture involves process of planning and construction of individual buildings, while civil engineering deals with other structures as well like dams and canals also. Urban design is a large scale model, which involves planning of streets, roads and public areas. Architecture deals with social, environmental and aesthetic aspects of building, while civil engineering deals with basics like lightening and aeration aspects in buildings. Civil engineering involves on all levels like public sector, national and international levels, but architecture has limited scope. Architecture is considered as a signature of any civilization and we get a lot of information from the buildings of old civilizations.
