What is the Difference between Nuclear Fission and Nuclear Fusion
Nuclear or commonly known as nuke-technology has worked in such a way that world got some most deadly weapons and the most sophisticated power generation process. 3/4th of the total countries of the world are having nuclear powerhouses and 7 countries have made their own nuclear weapons or nukes. Anyway, the uranium atom can be used in two ways, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion
Nuclear Fission
Nuclear fission is the process of splitting a heavy uranium nucleus into photons in form of Gama rays, free neutrons and some other particles (barium atom) from the same atom. In this process, U235 atom is hit by a neutron, this power hitting breaks the nucleus this releases energy in the form of photons or Gama rays.
Nuclear Fusion
Nuclear fusion is the process in which two or more than two atoms are fused to form a new heavy atom. In this process the new nucleus formed gets more photons and the energy released in this process is E=mc2 or simply the Einstein’s law of energy, i.e., the matter converting into light energy. Deuterium and tritium (the isotopes of H2O) are commonly fused to get energy.
Nuclear Fission vs Nuclear Fusion
Nuclear fission releases energy when a heavy atom is broken, while nuclear fusion releases energy when two atoms are fused. Nuclear fission required very little energy but nuclear fusion required extremely high energy for its process. Fission does not occur in nature while fusion occurs not on earth but on big stars like sun. Very highly radioactive particles are produce in fission process while fusion also creates those radioactive particles only if trigger is used. Atomic bombs are the product of nuclear fission while hydrogen bombs are product of nuclear fusion. This is why hydrogen bomb is considered the deadliest of the weapons. Nuclear fission needs high speed neutrons while fusion needs high temperature and high density environment.
