What is the Difference between Magellan, Navman, Copilot, TomTom and Garmin
GPS or Global Positioning System is a satellite-based navigation system, originally intended for military applications. Now this system is available for civilian use since 1980. Today, many companies are providing GPS system in all over the world. Here, I am going to unveil the status and difference between world-famous GPS providing companies.
Magellan
One of the leading manufacturers of GPS systems are Magellan. They started work in min 80s and have more than 200 patents in GPS technology. This name is famous in technology and is known for making RoadMate and Maestro series, which are used in car navigation. Their products have won many awards as well. As a next step in GPS technology, they are offering Mobile GPS and other applications for iPhone. Car kit accessory is another important innovation on their credit.
Navman
Navman, founded in 1986 in New Zealand, is known for making stand alone GPS units. They also manufacture OEM GPS modules, GPS software for small computers, handheld navigation system. Navigation system, which one can use at sea level, is another achievement of Navman.
Copilot
CoPilot navigation was developed by ALK Technologies, as an advanced technology. It was originally founded in 1979. CoPilot powers many of the most successful mobile operators and device manufacturers' GPS navigation and mapping applications.
TomTom
TomTom NV is a Dutch company, who are known for making verities of navigation system. You can find stand alone units, as well as various related software in their collection. Basically, they deal with three kinds of products, i.e. navigation devices, car control services and mobile phone related navigation software.
Garmin
This company was established in 1989 in Switzerland. It was founded as a parent company, for many other companies. It works on developing, marine, aviation and consumer based GPS system. It was having 35 patents till the year 2000, the number is increasing with every passing year.
Magellan vs Navman vs Copilot vs TomTom vs Garmin
All Magellan and Garmin GPS units use NAVTEQ mapping data, while TomTom uses Tele Atlas. Magellan's Maestro unit ships with 2007 NAVTEQ maps pre-installed, while the Garmin nuvi's NAVTEQ maps are several years old. TomTom newly updated Tele Atlas maps are also from 2007.
