What is the Difference between Iden, Fdm, Gsm, Fdma, Tdma and Cdma
Communication through mobile networks has made our life very easy. However, have you ever thought that what kind of technology is working behind transmission of mobile signals or accessibility of networks in different areas? In fact, there are different comminacation technologies that work behind accessibility of different mobile networks. Some very common mobile technologies that we use in various networks are Iden, Fdm, Gsm, Fdma, Tdma and Cdma. Let’s see the difference between them.
iDEN
iDEN or Integrated Digital Enhanced Network is such a cellular telecommunication technology that works on 25 KHz channel by using TDMA and speech compression technologies. It is developed by Motorola.
FDM
FDM or Frequency Signal Multiplexing is a signal transmission technology that allows the selection of several signal inputs at a time and assigns the non-overlapped frequencies to different users. FDM allows multiplexing of up to 24 voice channels into four wires.
GSM
GSM or Global System for Mobile Communication represents 2G or second generation digital mobile networks. In United States, it operates on 850-1900 MHz bands in contrast to Europe and Asia, where it works 900-1800 MHz
FDMA
FDMA or Frequency Division Multiple Access is a 2G signal access technology that is used in GSM networks. It works on both analogue and digital signal processing technologies and separates the using frequencies into distinct voice channels.
TDMA
TDMA is another 2G GSM access technology that can divide the same frequency channel of 30 KHz width and 6.7 ms length into different time slots and allows the users to share these time slots of same frequency.
CDMA
CDMA or Code Division Multiple Access is spread spectrum mobile communication technology in which data is first converted into small packets and sent through number of distinct frequencies. In this case, each user is provided with a unique spreading code to communicate with each other.
Iden vs Fdm vs Gsm vs Fdma vs Tdma vs Cdma
GSM is a 2G global cellular network that uses FDMA, TDMA and CDMA technologies for signal transmission or communication between users. FDMA allows transmission of only one frequency at a time in contrast to TDMA that allows divides the same frequency into three time slots that is further modified in CDMA that assign a separate code to each user. iDEN is also based upon TDMA is widely using in telecommunication of mobile phones and trunked radio. However, FDM is just a signal multiplexing technique that assigns separate frequencies to individual users.
