What is the Difference between cat5 and cat6
Category 5 and category 6 cables are used for data transmission in twisted pair cables. For most people, they both are same and mostly people don’t even know what cat means. The network professionals have categorized the cables in different categories according to their use and capabilities of data transmission. Cat5 and Cat6 are the most commonly used cables among those categories. These cables are made up of four copper wires.
Cat5
Cat5 is the basic cable used for signal transmission. It comes with two varieties; shielded twisted pair (STP) and unshielded twisted pair (USTP). The shielded twisted pair provides more protection against the interference of data but unshielded TP are used widely. Cat5 comes in solid as well as stranded form. Solid is rigid cable used for long distance data transfer while stranded is used as patch cable. Cat5 also has an enhanced version that has more bandwidth. Cat5 carries up to 100 MHz while cat5 carried up to 1000 MHz data.
Cat6
Cat 6 is most advanced and is known for its best performance. Cat 6 is also made of four copper wires but the structural difference makes it, the best for the users. It contains a longitudinal separator that separates the four wires, which prevents cross talk and makes the data delivery fast by giving the bandwidth twice as fast as of cat5. Cat6 supports 10 GB bandwidth and transmits 250 MHz data at a time.
Cat5 vs Cat6
Cat6 cable has more twists than cat 5, which prevents the loss of data. For telecommunications, the cable with less resistance is desired, so cat 6 is the cable perfect for that use. When more speedy transmission is needed cat 6 is fine, while the data transmission for less distant places well do well even with cat5. While setting up a network, cat 5 is used for inter-linking of computers and cat6 for their linkage to the main hub.
