What is the Difference between Arbitrator, Umpire and Referee
When there is contest between the two or more than two parties we need judge, either it is a playground or a court room. Different terms are used for this purpose; Arbitrator, Umpire and referee are few of them. All three are used for almost same purpose but yet they are different. Here, we are describing difference between them.
Arbitrator
Alternative dispute resolution or ARD is a legal technique, in which disputes are resolved outside the court. In this non formal court, arbitrator is the person who plays the role of judge and all parties are bond to agree to his decision. Arbitrator reviews the evidence and imposes his decision. His decision is legally binding for both parties. This form of judgment is usually used for resolution of commercial disputes. In case of international disputes, the same technique is used.
Umpire
N umpire is person that usually plays the role of judge in various kinds of sports activities like baseball and cricket. He is the person that applies his experience to judge the activities of players in the game and also takes decision about correct or wrong shots that are executed by the players. The decision of umpire is not challengeable, as he is selected from third party instead of having relations with any party.
Referee
Referee is also a person that performs the duties of judge in various kinds of gaming activities like football, wrestling etc. He is the person that not only tells the rules and regulations about concerned gaming activity to both games, but also observes their performance. Moreover, he takes care of sports quality and takes decision about right and wrong performed by both teams.
Arbitrator vs Umpire vs Referee
All three types of persons that are Arbitrator, Umpire and Referee are the persons that perform their duties as judge but outside the court. The difference is that, an arbitrator is the person that takes care of legal matters and tries to resolve the legal issues outside the court. He is considered specialist of dealing commercial matters. On the other hands, umpire and referee are the judges that plays the roles of decision maker or judge in different types of sports. They ensure the rules and regulations in sports activities. The games related to umpires are like cricket and baseball, while referee applies his judging role in football, snooker and various athletics.
