What is the Difference between Standby, Shut Down, Hibernate and Sleep

Sometimes, when we have to go somewhere for a short duration during working at computer, we have four different options in this concern. Different operating systems provide different number of options means 2, 3 or 4. These four options are Standby, Shut Down, Hibernate and Sleep. Now, it depends upon user that what option he want to adopt. However, before adaption, it is necessary to get proper knowledge about these options that is as below.

Standby

Standby means turns off the display, stops the hard-disk drive, and turns off other internal devices so that the computer uses less battery power. When the computer resumes operation from Standby mode, the desktop is restored exactly as it was before entering Standby mode.

Shut Down

Shut Down means the computer is powered off completely. It’s the best option when you won’t be using your computer for several hours as it saves electricity.  It is also best for the health and longevity of your computer as the heat that builds up inside computers slowly degrades and destroys them.

Hibernate

When hard disk is used to store computer’s memory (RAM), even after switching off the computer, this is called hibernation. In this case, after turning on the computer, the previous status of computer become active and you never loss any data.

Sleep

When a computer is in Sleep mode it is still powered on slightly so that the RAM can store the open programs, But if you lose power you lose your data. Sleep is good if you're just going to leave the PC for a few hours (like 3-5) and don't want to completely shut down the computer because you'll need it immediately when you come back.

Standby vs Shut Down vs Hibernate vs Sleep

Sleep stores all of the open data in the RAM, and switches the computer to low power mode. It will wake faster than booting up.  Stores all the data on your hard drive, and when you press the power button it will come out of hibernate. You computer shuts down, so it takes just as long as a normal start up. Hibernate is slower than sleep but safer as the data is saved to the hard drive.  Shut Down simply means the operating system and turns off the computer. While, if the computer loses power while in Standby mode, all data that was being worked on is lost.
