What is the Difference between Plastic, Ceramic, Quartz, Crystal and Glass
There are various types of manufacturing materials that we use in our domestic and industrial requirements. Some of them found naturally, but some are man-made and produced on commercial basis. Moreover, each material is different in terms of properties and we use it to produce material exactly in that property. Plastic, Ceramic, Quartz, Crystal and Glass are the names of some manufacturing materials. Let’s see the difference between them.
Plastic
Plastic is a man-made organic material that is used to produce countless things both for domestic and industrial things. Plastic is further derived from petrochemicals and is a type of organic polymer. The key specialty of plastic that is mold-ability makes it perfect for making thousand of daily usable things.
Ceramic
Ceramic is the carbon or silicon-based synthetic material that is usually crystalline and inorganic in nature. The applications of ceramic in manufacturing of industrial as well as domestic products are countless. Ceramic pottery has become a classic art and now ceramic engineering has become a vast industrial field.
Quartz
Quartz is one of the most widely available minerals that are found on the earth crust in all parts of globe. It is nothing, but simply the combination of silicon and oxygen atoms in the form of SiO4. Today, quartz is widely using material in jewelry making, hard stone craving and manufacturing material for glass fiber.
Crystal
Crystal is not itself the name of any particular material either natural or synthetic, but it is the representation of its molecular arrangement in well ordered form and excellent geometrical shape. Crystalline materials may be ionic or molecular and have hard or soft nature respectively. Some common crystals are diamond and table salt.
Glass
Glass is a man-made, non-crystalline material that is optically transparent and brittle material. Its basic components are silica, calcium oxide and sodium oxide. Today, the use of glass material in optics, window glass, electronics, drinking utensils, kitchen items, industrial products like glass fiber has become much more.
Plastic vs Ceramic vs Quartz vs Crystal vs Glass
All these material are manufacturing materials that are used in making both household and industrial products in abundance. However, they all exhibit different properties. Plastic, ceramic and glass are man-made materials, but ceramic is crystalline and inorganic material in contrast to glass that is non-crystalline and transparent material. However, plastic is organic material and use in making of both crystalline and amorphous materials. Quartz is naturally found mineral that is used in making of glass material and jewelry. Crystalline materials have superb geometrical shape and diamond is the best example of purely crystalline materials.
