What is the Difference between Petroleum Coolant Glidant Grease and Lubricant
In today’s fast pacing life we are using a large number of chemical products. We are using them in our homes, industries and even at working places. Some of these products have wide range of use, while others have limited applications. Petroleum is a widely used product, which is important for running many machines. Some other names like coolant, glidant, grease and lubricants are also commonly used. All these are different products, and we are stating difference between them.
Petroleum
By definition, petroleum is a flammable liquid, which occurs naturally. Crude oil has a large number of products. To make them useable oil refineries are working day and night. Petroleum is the refined product of this crude oil. Petroleum is recovered by oil drilling. It is used as ingredient in making many products like plastics.
Coolant
A liquid which flows through a device to prevent the overheating of this device is called as coolant. Ideally, a coolant has high thermal capacity and low viscosity, low cost and no toxicity. Coolants are commonly used in automotives and temperature control applications.
Glidant
When a substance is added in a powder to improve its flow ability, it is called as glidant. It can work up to a limited range of concentration only, after a certain concentration it works in opposite direction.
Grease
Grease is a group of products, which define semisolid lubricants. Usually soap emulsified with vegetable oil or mineral oil is called as grease. It has high viscosity and reduces the friction between two surfaces. It is usually applied to the surfaces where lubricating oil do not stay. It also acts as a sealant to prevent the intrusion of water or any other material.
Lubricant
A substance which is used to reduce the friction between two surfaces, it is called as lubricant. It also transports foreign particles. Properties of an ideal lubricant are high boiling point, high viscosity index and corrosion prevention. Motor oil is an example of lubricant.
Petroleum vs Coolant vs Glidant vs Grease vs Lubricant
Petroleum is a product of crude oil and usually we get it by the process of drilling, all other are also chemical products but usually they are manufactured by different processes. Petroleum is used for power generation in vehicles while coolant and lubricants are useful for the proper functioning of vehicles. Grease is a form of lubricant, which is used to reduce the friction, while glidant is mixed in a powder to make it liquid or semi liquid. Coolant can change their state after absorbing the heat from the device, while all others remain in the same state after use.
