What is the Difference between Mitosis and Meiosis
No doubt, both mitosis and meiosis are the processes of reproduction by division of parent cell into daughter cells. Actually, the reason behind confusion of people about these two identical names is that in both cases, the division of chromosomes occurs for reproduction process. To clarify the difference between mitosis and meiosis, here is a comprehensive discussion.
Mitosis
This is the process of cell division, in which a parent cell divides into two diploid daughter cells for the purpose of reproduction. Actually, here cell division means the separation of two chromosomes, present in one nucleus, into two identical sets present in two nuclei. However, the number of chromosomes in each daughter cell remains same as in parent cell. This type of reproduction is called asexual reproduction, because it creates everything other than sex cells.
Meiosis
When the homologous chromosomes, in a diploid cell, separate to form four haploid daughter cells, then this type of sexual reproduction is called as meiosis. In this type of cellular reproduction, the number of chromosomes reduced by half in daughter cells as compared to parent cell.
Mitosis vs Meiosis
The major and obvious difference between mitosis and meiosis is their type of reproduction, which is asexual in terms of mitosis and sexual in case of meiosis. In mitosis, the number of chromosomes remains the same in contrast to meiosis, in which reduced by half. Moreover, in case of meiosis, the number of division is two and ultimately numbers of daughter cells are four. On the other side, the number of division in mitosis is just one and finally the number of daughter cells remains two. Similarly, in case of mitosis, no pairing of homologues occurs rather than meiosis, in which it occurs. Another clear difference is that, mitosis occurs in all types organisms, but meiosis occurs only in human, plants, animals and fungi.
