What is the Difference between Methane, Alcohol, Methanol and Ethanol
There are different types of chemical compounds that we use in our daily life. Alcohol, methanol, ethanol and methane are are the names of some commonly available chemical compounds. They are different from each other in terms of composition and properties. Let’s have a look on the difference between them.
Alcohol
It is a common organic compound. It is composed of a hydroxyl functional group attached with carbon atom. In the formation of Alcohol, an hydroxy functional group –OH is bound with centered carbon atoms. The carbon center should be saturated.
Methanol
It is also known methyl Alcohol, wood naphtha and wood spirits. Usually it is abbreviated as MeOH. It is a simple form of alcohol. It is a volatile, flammable and colorless liquid. It is sweeter than ethanol. It is used for producing bio-diesel.
Ethanol
It is also called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol or drinking alcohol. It is also a volatile and flammable liquid. It is used as a recreational drug. It is used in alcoholic beverages. It is one of the oldest recreational drugs. It is also used in thermometers and as fuel. In common it is known as spirits.
Methane
It is an organic chemical compound. Its formula is CH4. it is a simple alkane and is a core element of natural gas.
Methane vs Alcohol vs Methanol vs Ethanol
The difference between alcohol and methanol is, alcohol is a basic organic compound having carbon as a centered atom and bond with hydroxy functional group. While methanol is a simple form of alcohol. It is volatile, flammable and colorless liquid, which is at room temperature, is a polarized material. The difference between ethanol and methane is, ethanol is a form of alcohol known as ethyl alcohol. It is a drinking alcohol, which is used as recreational drink or drug. It is also used as a fuel. While methane is a simple alkane. It is a core component of natural gas.
