What is the Difference between Jet Fuel, Fuel Oil, Kerosene, Diesel, Gasoline
We get Petroleum from the earth core. When it comes out, it has many impurities in it. A chemical process called fractional distillation is carried out and impurities are removed. The residue or distilled products of petroleum are different like gasoline, diesel, kerosene, jet fuel. Let’s have a look on difference between them.
Fuel oil
It is a fraction, which is obtained from distillation of petroleum. It may be a residue or distillate. It is used in boilers or furnaces to produce heat for power generation. It is made of long carbon chains containing alkenes, cycloalkanes and aromatics. Diesel is an example of fuel oil.
Kerosene
It is also called paraffin. It is used as jet fuel and also for some rockets. It is commonly used in heating and fire toys. In UK there are some classes of kerosene, which are used according to their specific class.
Jet Fuel
It is a special type of fuel designed for use in air crafts. It is normally known as Jet A and jet A-1. They are produced at international standards and specifications. Another jet fuel called jet-B is used for civilian turbine engine powered aviation. It is a mixture of different hydrocarbons.
Diesel
Diesel generally refers the term for a liquid fuel used in diesel engines is called diesel fuel or oil. Diesel derived from fractional distillation of petroleum is called petrodiesel, while biodiesel and biomass to liquid are increasing today.
Gasoline
It is a petroleum-derived fuel used in internal combustion engines. It consists of many organic compounds. It is a fractional distilled product enhanced with many additives to improve quality.
Jet Fuel vs Fuel Oil vs Kerosene vs Diesel vs Gasoline
The difference between kerosene and jet fuel is, kerosene is not used as jet fuel because the jet fuel is produced under international standards and specifications, while kerosene is normally used as heating fuel. Difference between diesel and gasoline is, diesel is a liquid fuel used in diesel engines, while gasoline is used only in internal combustion engines. Both are produced after fractional distillation of petroleum but differ in additives and uses. The term fuel oil is used for fraction which is obtained from petroleum distillation. Diesel, gasoline, kerosene all are the fuel oils.
