What is the Difference between Fission and Fusion
In today’s age the most efficient way to produce energy is by nuclear reaction. The reactions involving nuclei and subatomic particles from any other atom or source are called Nuclear Reactions. Obviously, Fission and Fusion are two types of Nuclear reactions. However, there are many differences between them. Here is all about these differences between Fission and Fusion.
Fission
In Nuclear Fission Reaction one heavy Nucleus splits into two or more small nuclei giving out a large amount of energy. Fission reaction is an exothermic reaction. Fission Reaction is chain reaction mean it sustains itself. Today, Nuclear Reactors have made controlled Fission reaction, possible. While, in Nuclear weapons, uncontrolled fission reaction is carried out.
Fusion
Fusion Reaction is simply the combining of two or more nuclei, making one larger nucleus. For fusion reaction, huge amount of energy is absorbed initially to complete the reaction. It is required to bring two nuclei close enough so that they can combine producing one heavy nucleus. Large amount of energy is required to overcome the nuclear forces. Fusion reaction is several times carried out for advanced weaponry. It is also used for civil works and betterment of mankind as well.
Fission vs Fusion
The key difference between Fission and fusion is that, a Fission reaction produces large amount of energy with less input but for Fusion reaction it is required to provide very huge amount of energy prior to any other result before starting the Reaction. Moreover, Fusion of two nuclei having mass less than Iron (Fe) produce energy. In case of Fission reaction, energy is produced when atoms of mass greater than Iron (Fe) are used. Fission Reaction does not occur in the nature automatically, scientists have made it possible by years of hard work in laboratories. On the other hand, Fusion reaction is the main source of energy in all stars like Sun.
