What is the Difference between Fermentation Corrosion Oxidation and Reduction

When we talk about chemical reactions, the most common names that come in our mind are like Fermentation, corrosion, oxidation and reduction. These are the names of different chemical reactions, which take place due to various reasons. They also put impact on many fields of life especially most of the industrial processes are incomplete without these chemical reactions. Just take a look upon the key differences between these chemical reactions.

Fermentation

It is a process to extract energy from organic compounds with the help of oxidation. For example, Lactic acid is produced from homolactic fermentation. The most common subtract of fermentation is sugar and typical products of fermentation are lactic acid, hydrogen and ethanol. In beers, wines and other alcoholic products the production of ethanol is carried out by yeast fermentation.

Corrosion

It is a process of degradation of engineered material in its different parts due to a chemical reaction. Electrochemical corrosion of metals occurs when it reacts with any oxidant. Rusting is a common example of electrochemical corrosion. It occurs due to the formation of iron oxide due to the oxidation of iron atom in solutions.

Oxidation

It is refer as the addition of oxygen or loss of hydrogen. Oxidation of glucose to form carbon dioxide is an example of oxidation. Similarly oxidation of methane in human body is a complicated example of oxidation.

Reduction

It is called the gain of electrons or hydrogen and loss of oxygen. For Example, Reduction of carbon by hydrogen to yield methane (CH4) is also a reduction process. It is the decrease in oxidation state.

Fermentation vs Corrosion vs Oxidation vs Reduction

The difference between fermentation and corrosion is that, in fermentation we extract energy from organic compounds with the help of oxidation. In corrosion process, electrochemical oxidation disintegrates the materials. Oxidation and reduction are opposite reactions of each other. Addition of oxygen or loss of electrons is oxidation and its opposite reaction is reduction. These oxidation-reductions are also called “Redox” collectively.
