What is the Difference between Energy Flux, Luminosity and Brightness
Science is very vast field, which is divided into many branches. Some are precisely scientific, while other has a strong impact on our daily lives. Some terms are purely scientific, but we can find their applications in our lives. Energy flux, luminosity and brightness are examples of these terms. They appear same but actually they are different. Light is very important part of our lives and all these are different attributes of light, everyone define these terms in different ways. We are describing few differences between them.
Energy Flux
Energy flux can be defined as the rate of transfer of energy through a surface. It is also called as energy current. The quantity of energy flux is defined into two different ways, depending on the context. It is a vector quantity and a very important factor in many cases. Energy flux varies with the nature of surface. Different surfaces have different energy flux.
Luminosity
Luminosity is the measurement of brightness. Its SI units are candela per square meter. Luminosity function describes the average visual sensitivity of the human eye to light of different wavelengths. In simple words luminosity is the amount of light emitted from a source of light. This light source can be natural or artificial.
Brightness
Brightness is an important attribute of visual perception in which a source appears to be radiating or reflecting light. This can be natural or artificial. This is a subjective attribute of an object, which is being observed by person. Brightness has no units, but it is expressed in ‘Lumens”.
Energy Flux vs Luminosity vs Brightness
Light has different meanings for everyone. Luminosity and brightness are two different attributes of light, while energy flux is the rate of transfer of energy, when it is moving through a surface. Luminosity is the amount of light emitted from a light source, which can be anything. On the other hand, brightness is the amount of light received by an object, which is viewed by the human eye. All three have different units; Brightness is expressed in lumens, while luminosity is measured in candela per square meter. The area of illumination is inversely proportional to the brightness, whereas luminosity is not. Energy flux depends on the surface, while brightness and luminosity do not have strong relation with surface of the object. These are the few differences between these terms, which explain the basic terms.
