What is the Difference between Chiller, Freezer, Refrigerator and Heat Pump
Moving heat from objects is a dynamic scientific operation that is widely used all over the world with the help of various machines. Some commonly using machines for heat transfer from objects are Chiller, Freezer, Refrigerator and Heat Pump. All these machines perform almost similar task but with varying potential and different working operation. Here is the difference between these widely using machines.
Chiller
Chiller is the machine that extracts heat from liquid by using vapor compression technique. To drop the temperature of liquid, compressor is used in chiller. Chillers are widely used in air-conditioning system as well as in many industrial applications like food and beverage processing, chemical processing, paper and cement processing and many more.
Freezer
Freezers are the domestic and industrial appliances that transfer heat from the objects, kept within an enclosed area, by means of evaporation. It works on the principle of refrigeration and an evaporating or cooling gas is used to evaporate heat from the objects. Freezers can drop temperature from – 10 to – 30 degree Fahrenheit.
Refrigerator
Refrigerator is also highly using home and industrial appliance that is used to preserve food and beverages by lowering their temperature. The principle of refrigerator is again refrigeration and evaporation is the process that draws the heat from objects and transfers it to the surrounding atmosphere. Normally, it cannot lower the temperature beyond – 10 degree Fahrenheit.
Heat Pump
Heat pumps also work on refrigeration principle and transfer thermal energy from source to sink. Heat pumps can be used ideally both for lowering the temperature and rising the temperature as well by simply making the source, a sink for heat pump.
Chiller vs Freezer vs Refrigerator vs Heat Pump
All these machines that are named as Chiller, Freezer, Refrigerator and Heat Pump work on the same principle to transfer the heat from objects or source to surrounding or sink. This major principle is refrigeration and evaporation is adopted to achieve the task. The difference between these machines is only that, they work on different capacities and for different objects. Chillers are used to lower temperature of liquids within the range 35-45 degree Fahrenheit. However, freezers can reduce temperature of objects within the range -10 to – 30 degree Fahrenheit in contrast to refrigerators that is again used for cooling the objects but up to temperature range – 10 degree Fahrenheit. Heat pumps are different from all these machines just in one respect that they can be used either to lower or even to increase temperature.
