What is the Difference between Sapphire, Jade, Emerald and Ruby
Gemstone is a piece of mineral, which is used in jewelry after cutting and polishing. Different gem stones have different value, which depends on the cutting, polish and shine. Different myths are associated with different gems. Sapphire, Jade, Emerald and ruby are different gem stone and it is really difficult for a common person to understand the difference between them. Let’s try to differentiate between all of them.
Sapphire
Sapphire is a gemstone which is aluminum oxide in nature. Iron, titanium, chromium, copper or magnesium can be present in trace amount and their presence can give it blue, yellow, pink, purple, orange or green color. Sapphire is a hard stone, on Mohs scale its 9. Other than jewelry it is used in scientific instruments, wrist watch crystals and high durability windows.
Jade
Jade is also an ornamental stone, which is silicate mineral in nature. Jade is usually of green color and this color is due to the presence of iron. If iron content is higher the color of jade will be rich green. Jade is divided into two sub classes, Nephrite and Jadeite.
Emerald
This gemstone is beryl in nature, which also has traces of chromium and vanadium. It’s also belong to the hard stone category, as it hardness is early 8 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness. It’s also a green stone, which can be yellow green to blue green. It forms hexagonal crystals.
Ruby
It is also an aluminum oxide mineral, which has pink to red color. Red color of ruby is due to the presence of chromium element. It belongs to the sapphire class of gemstones. It is considered as the fourth precious stone after diamond, sapphire and emerald. Red color determines the price of ruby and cut and carat is also important when it comes to the price.
Sapphire vs Jade vs Emerald vs Ruby
All these are precious gemstones, which are used in making jewelry. Sapphire and ruby are closely related yet different. They both are aluminum oxides in nature but ruby has traces of chromium, which gives it red color. Jade and emerald are green in color while ruby is red and Sapphire comes is a great verity of colors. Sapphire, ruby and emerald are considered as hard stones as compared to jade. Sapphire makes trigonal crystals while crystals of emerald are hexagonal. The nature of ruby’s crystal varies in different situations. All these stones are found in different parts of the world.
