What is the Difference between Hematite Iron Galena Chalcopyrite Pyrite and Gold

Mineral are very important part of our lives. They are used in making machines and different household items. Some minerals are used in ornaments as well. Iron and related minerals are important for our proper functioning of body as well. Different minerals like hematite, Iron, Galena, Pyrite and Gold are often misunderstood by the people. All these are different types of minerals; here we are mentioning difference between them.

Hematite

There are many forms of iron oxide, one mineral form is Hematite. It is usually present in black, steel gray, brown and reddish brown colors. It is mined as the ore of iron. This iron mineral is harder than iron in pure form but brittle than the iron. Hematite is usually found in bottom of lakes and standing water. It is also formed as a result of volcanic activity.

Iron

Iron is a chemical element, which has atomic number 26. It is one of the common elements, which form the crust of planet earth. Pure iron is soft so different other elements are mixed with it to make alloys, which are further used for making different things.

Galena

Galena is Lead sulfide in its natural form. It is the most important and commonly used lead ore mineral. It is present in abundant quantity on planet earth. It is used for different purposes, since ancient times. Now a day, Galena is used for making lead- acid batteries, wireless sets and other communication devices.

Chalcopyrite

Copper iron sulfide mineral is called as chalcopyrite. It is found in golden yellow color. In natural environment, chalcopyrite is often contaminated with other elements. It is most important copper ore, which is used for making number of items, like copper pipes, electric circuits and coins.

Pyrite

Pyrite is iron sulfide ore, which has metallic luster and it appears like gold. That is the reason; it is called as fool’s gold. Pyrite is the most common sulfide mineral and it is used for making low cost solar panels. It is also used as metal detector. It is also used for making jewelry items.

Gold

With atomic number 79, gold is a chemical element. It is soft, shiny and dense metal. It appears bright yellow is pure form. It is resistant to acids but dissolves in aqua regia. Gold is considered as a precious metal and used for making jewelry since long.

Hematite vs Iron vs Galena vs Chalcopyrite vs Pyrite vs Gold

Hematite is an iron oxide, which is found in black, gray and radish brown colors. Iron is chemical element, which is soft in pure form. Many other elements are mixed with iron to make alloys. Galena is lead mineral, mixed with sulfide. Galena is used for making batteries and wireless sets. On the other hand, chalcopyrite is copper iron sulfide mineral, used for making copper pipes and coins. Pyrite is also iron mineral, mixed with sulfide and used for making solar panels and jewelry. Gold is highly precious metal, used for making jewelry.
