What is the Difference between Paralegal Public Defender Lawyer and Attorney
When we face any legal matter in our life, we always need such person who has in depth knowledge of all laws and acts related to our concerned matter in the light of state’s laws. These persons could be Paralegal, Public Defender, Lawyer or Attorney. Like the matters of law, it is also very difficult to understand the difference between these legal authorities and people remain confused that which is right for them in what matter. To resolve this confusion, here is key difference between these legal persons.
Paralegal
An assistant of competent lawyers, who would be paraprofessional, is called paralegal. This definition is appropriate to clear the status of paralegal in United States. However, in Paralegals have individual authority and licensed person as well.
Public Defender
A public defender is such a lawyer, who deals with only criminal charges, but without the assistance of an attorney. However, they also assist attorneys depends upon their number of staff members like investigators, clerical staff, forensic experts etc.
Lawyer
The proper definition of lawyer in Black’s Law dictionary is that, a lawyer is the person that practicing law. The types of lawyers could be different depends upon their specialized area of charges.
Attorney
In most of the countries like United States, Japan and Sri Lanka, the word attorney is used for lawyers in official language. However, an attorney has not rank equal to high-court advocates.
Paralegal vs Public Defender vs Lawyer vs Attorney
One of the main differences between lawyer and paralegal is that a paralegal is not a lawyer but on the other hand he or she knows so much about the law and the various proceedings and processes related to the practice of law. A Lawyer is a person who can provide legal advice and has been trained all about laws; while, an Attorney is a person who is legally permitted to represent another person or act in his behalf. On the other hand; no doubt, a public defender is a lawyer, but he is employed by the state.
