What is the Difference Between Similar But Different Things, Terms, and Objects

What is the Difference between User, Customer, Client and Consumer

Languages have a strange characteristic which is the collection of many such words that can be used interchangeably. Grammatically, it is not necessary that the collection of words having a similar meaning should be synonyms of each other. However, people do not care about these typical grammar rules while using these words in their daily life. User, Customer, Client and Consumer are the example of such words which people often use in similar meanings. They don’t care that either these words could be used in replacement of each other or not. The reason is obvious, the meanings of these words are very close to each other. However, if you want to clear your concept about accurate meanings of these words and their proper use in the sentences, it is necessary to read the difference between these words which is as follows.

User

A user is the person who uses any product or service either its own or borrowed from any person. It is not necessary for a user to use only that thing, which he or she buys. There could be anything related to any person which could be under the use of a user.

Customer

A customer is necessarily that person who aims to buy the product or service of any company. Again, it is not necessary for a person to buy the product or service to be called as a customer.

Client

A client is also a person who contacts with the manufacturer or service provider to buy some product or use some service. A person is said to a client only under the condition when he / she purchases some item or pay some amount against using the service of any company.

Consumer

A consumer is typically categorized a person who purchases and then uses a product or service. This is the term which has similar meanings with “user” and can be used as an alternate of this word.

User vs Customer vs Client vs Consumer

The word “User” and “Consumer” are most likely the same words which could be used interchangeably. In other words, you can say that consuming or using the services or product of any company is the same things, but in case of consumer it is considered top buy the product at first then use it in contrast to user which is a general term. On the other hand, both “Client” and “Customer” are the persons who aims to buy anything but in case of client it becomes necessary to buy this first. This condition is not necessary in case of customer.
