What is the Difference between Good at, Mediocrity, Excellence and Perfection
It’s human nature to rank things. Everyone has its own criteria, based on his knowledge and experience, but we all rank things in different categories. Some are good, some others are bad and still others are simply perfect for us. However, words like mediocrity, excellence and perfection are although very common, but sometimes used at wrong places. Here we are discussing the differences between these terms.
Good at
If we consult a dictionary, it says Good means, virtuous, righteous or pious. When someone shows good quality performance, we usually say that he is good at that thing. It does not mean an ideal performance or excellent work; it’s just a right work, which is acceptable.
Mediocrity
When something is of moderate quality, it is called as Mediocre and state of being mediocre is called as mediocrity. Sometimes the word is used in negative meaning and a mediocre thing is considered as second grade or low quality.
Excellence
When something is unusually good, or it’s beyond the ordinary standards, it is called as excellent and this condition is called as excellence. It is one of the standards of performance. Excellence is better than ordinary and standard values.
Perfection
When something is flawless, it is considered as perfect and this condition is called as perfection. It is a state of completeness and is considered as superior one. There is nothing beyond perfection. A complete thing is all respects touch the line of perfection.
Good at vs Mediocrity vs Excellence vs Perfection
All these are different grades of ranking things. When something is around average, or a person performs well, he is considered as good at that thing. Similarly, mediocrity is also an average quality, but at times it is considered in negative terms and is considered as low grade thing. On the other hand, excellence and perfection are positive terms. When something is better than the average, this state is called as excellence and when something is flawless, this state is called as perfection. Usually, excellence and perfection are used interchangeably.
