What is the Difference between Orthopedist, Podiatrist and Chiropodist
There are different type of diseases and their treatments. Orthopedics is a field of medical sciences, which deals with the disease of muscular skeletal system. It includes problems and injuries of foot, leg joints, tendons and muscles. There are different types of physicians who treat these types of problems. Let’s have a look on these physicians and difference between them.
Orthopedist
An orthopedist is also called an orthopedic surgeon. An orthopedist is a physician, who is trained in the treatment of the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. An orthopedist may treat foot as well as many other problems.
Podiatrist
A podiatrist is a specialist in foot and ankle. They are concerned with examination, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot and ankle ailment by surgery or other medical treatments. Other physicians may consult with a podiatrist regarding foot problems. Examination of children’s feet is an integral part of podiatrist.
Chiropodist
A chiropodist is also a foot doctor. In British English a podiatrist is known as a chiropodist, which is an American version. Earlier the chiropodist was known to treat problems of both hand and foot. But now a day chiropodist only treats foot problems.
Orthopedist vs Podiatrist vs Chiropodist
The difference between an orthopedist and podiatrist is, an orthopedist is a physician which can treat all the problems including bones, ligaments, joints, muscles and tendons. He can treat all of the problems regarding to musculoskeletal system. While a podiatrist is a specialist in foot problems. He can treat only foot injuries. He can examine, diagnose and make treatment of ankle and foot injuries. The difference between podiatrist and chiropodist is, earlier chiropodist treat the problems of hand and foot both, while podiatrist can only treat foot and ankle problems. The major difference between both is, in British English a podiatrist is known as chiropodist and in American English a chiropodist is known as podiatrist.
