What is the Difference between Optician, Optometrist and Ophthalmologist
People, who are suffering from some sort of eye problem like weakness of eyesight or some infection, are very well familiar with three names that are an Optician, an optometrist and an ophthalmologist. However, only a few one know exactly the difference among them. To clear the difference among these persons, here is a comprehensive picture.
Optician
An optician is a man who fits eyeglasses and contact lenses. He analyzes and interprets prescriptions written by ophthalmologists or optometrists to determine which eyeglasses or contact lenses are best suited to the patient's lifestyle and visual needs.
Optometrist
An optometrist is not a medical doctor; rather he is doctor of optometry. These doctors can do multi jobs, like eye examination, they can also prescribe contact lenses and glasses. Optometrist can not only diagnose eye disease but can also treat them. Moreover, this doctor can apply several various therapies in case of eye problems. Optometrist is such a specialist, who is advisor in eye care, different therapies and eye diseases.
Ophthalmologist
Ophthalmologist is a comprehensive doctor, who can provide all sorts of eye treatments. He can provide medical and surgical care not to the eyes only, but for the whole visual system. Ophthalmologist works of basic jobs like eye examination and as next step he provides treatment for eye disorders and diseases. He also advices management of eye problems and can also prescribe eyeglasses. In case of severe problems, he can do eye surgery as well. Medical doctor or Optometrist both can be Ophthalmologist.
Optician vs Optometrist vs Ophthalmologist
The crystal clear among these three persons is that an optician is a businessman; an optometrist is a doctor of optometry that you cannot say a medical doctor as an Ophthalmologist, who is a professional medical doctor. A medical doctor cannot be optometrist, but he can be Ophthalmologist.
