What is the Difference between Fracture, Sprain and Strain
We face problems every day and some of them relate to our physical fitness. We suffer from diseases but some problems like Fracture, Sprain and strain are also common. They restrict our activities and are painful too. However, it is really difficult to understand the difference between them. A common man cannot differentiate between Sprain and strain and often these terms are used interchangeably. Here are some key differences between fracture, sprain and strain.
Fracture
Fracture is related to bone. When we have a break in the bone, it is called as fracture. This medical condition can be the result of high force. Osteoporosis and bone cancer can also lead to fracture. Bone break is also used is the same meaning but it is not correct in medical language. People with lower bone density face more fractures and usually smokers have lower bone density.
Sprain
When a ligament is stretched beyond its capacity, a person feels sprain. This injury is associated with joints. Sprains can occur in any joint but usually ankle and wrist joints are affected. Pain, inflammation and problems with movement are some common signs of a sprain. When a person tries to roll his ankle beyond his normal range, he suffers from a sprain.
Strain
When muscle and tendon structure is affected by stretching or tearing, we feel the strain. The point where a muscle is connected with tendon, is the actual place of strain. Running and jumping leads to muscle strain. Runners usually face this injury and usually their hamstring muscle is affected. Loss of strength, pain and muscle spasm are some common signs of strain. Overuse of muscles leads to this condition.
Fracture vs Sprain vs Strain
Fracture is related to bone while sprain and strain are muscle injuries. Fracture is more serious, if we compare them with other two. The sprain is the injury of ligament, when it is stretched beyond its capacity, on the other hand strain is the stretch in the muscle. Sprain usually occurs in ankle and wrist, while strain is commonly seen in hamstring muscle. Fracture is common in large bones, like arm and leg. The symptoms of all these conditions are more or less same, like pain and inflammation, but an expert doctor can differentiate between them. For fracture, the patient has to consult a doctor while common strains and sprains can heal after some time. In case of severe pain, strains and sprains must be addressed carefully.
