What is the Difference between Toasting Roasting Grilling Broiling Baking Frying Boiling
Food is necessary for the existence of life. Animals eat fruits and vegetables in raw form but for humans cooking is very important. Although, we also eat some vegetables and fruits is raw form, but for grains, meat and certain vegetables cooking is necessary, if we want to consume them. Different cooking techniques are used all over the world, which include toasting, roasting, grilling, baking and many others. Here we are describing the difference between them.
Toasting
When slice of bread is heated, until it gets the brown color is called toasting. However, now a day, it is not restricted to bread only, but already cooked food is also heated to give it to brown color.
Roasting
When dry heat is used for cooking purpose, it is called as roasting. Sources of heat could be any like flame or oven. Roasting is suitable for slow cooking, especially in case of large pieces of meat. It usually takes long time, as compared to other cooking methods.
Grilling
When dry heat applied to the surface of food, from above and below, it is called as grilling. In this method direct heat is given to the food, usually meat. Sliced meat is suitable for grilling, as it takes less time.
Broiling
When food is exposed to direct heat, it is called as broiling. Meat products are cooked through this method, as temperature is high in this case. When heat source comes from above, it is also called as broiling in United States and Canada.
Baking
Baking is done normally in an oven, and heat is provided to food by convection. Baking is used for breads, cakes, pies, tarts, cookies and pastries. These products are called as baked products and we can get them from bakery. Baked potatoes, baked bananas and lasagna are some other baked dishes.
Frying
Cooking of food is oil is called as frying. In some cultures, fats, other than oil, are also used. This is quick cooking methods and gives a unique texture and crispness to the food. Shallow frying, pan frying and deep frying are some types of this cooking method.
Boiling
Boiling is an old but harsh method of cooking. In this method food is cooked in boiling water. Soft foods like fish cannot be cooked through this method. Red meat, and root vegetables are usually cooked by boiling.
Toasting vs Roasting vs Grilling vs Broiling vs Baking vs Frying vs Boiling
All these rae different cooking methods, usually used for different foods. Toasting is used for bread, as it given brown appearance to a food. Roasting is used for large pieces of meat, as it is a slow method of cooking. In grilling direct heat is provided to the food and sliced food is prepared quickly. When heat source if provided from above it is called as broiling, but sometimes used for grilling. Cakes, pastries and cookies are prepared by baking them in oven. On the other hand, frying in cooking of food in oil, that could be shallow frying or deep frying. Cooking of food is boiling water is called boiling, it is also a quick method of cooking, but not suitable for soft foods.
