What is the Difference between Sweetened Condensed and Evaporated Milk
Milk is an important part of our diet. It is a great source of proteins and calcium. A glass of milk is necessary for every age group, while children need more milk every day. Once fresh milk was the only mil available for human consumption, however, now we have many types of milk, which we can store for long time. Sweetened condensed ad evaporated milk are two other forms of milk, which have longer shelf life and nutrition as compared to fresh milk. Some people often confuse them with each other, but we cannot use them interchangeably. Here is the difference between them.
Sweetened Condensed Milk
Sweetened condensed milk is processed milk, from which around 60 percent water has been removed. Besides removing the water, sugar has also been added in this type of milk. It contains nearly 45 percent sugar. It is pasteurized to stop the activity of micro organisms. Sugar also restricts the growth of microbes. This milk is very high in calories, so fat person are advised not to use it, regularly. It is used for making puddings, cookies and desserts. Now a day, it is available in different flavors also.
Evaporated Milk
When 60 percent of water is removed from milk through evaporation, it is called as evaporated milk. It is slightly dark in color as compared to fresh milk, but it pours exactly like evaporated milk. Companies are adding vitamin D and C for additional nutrition. It is also available in low fat and skim versions.
Sweetened Condensed milk vs Evaporated Milk
Both are different verities of processed milk. Both have 60 percent less water, but 40 to 45 percent sugar has been added in sweetened condensed milk, while evaporated milk is without sugar. Condensed milk is yellow in color and quite think in texture, while evaporated milk is slightly dark is color, but it pours exactly like fresh milk. Usually, vitamin A is added in condensed milk, while C and D are added in evaporated milk. The method used for the removal of milk is different in both cases.
