What is the Difference between Simple and Complex Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are no doubt, the essential source of energy for our body. After digestion, carbohydrates are converted into glucose. This glucose is then moves into our body cells through transportation of blood and ultimately, becomes a source of energy for us. However, carbohydrates are found in two major types naturally. These are simple and complex carbohydrates. To elaborate the difference between these two types of carbohydrates, here is a comprehensive discussion.
Simple Carbohydrates
Simple carbohydrates are common sugars, which we use in our daily food items. Chemically, this type of carbohydrates is made up of one or two sugars. The distinct feature of simple carbohydrates is that these take no longer time to dissolve in our bodies. These carbohydrates are available in simple as well as in refined form. Some regular sources of simple carbohydrates are fruits, vegetables, cakes, pastries, biscuits, chocolates, jellies, soft drinks etc.
Complex Carbohydrates
Complex carbohydrates are starchy foods and available in both natural and refined form. This type of carbohydrates is made up of linking three or more sugars. Complex carbohydrates dissolve gradually in our bodies. The commonly available sources of complex carbohydrates are oats, nuts, barley, beans, banana, potatoes, white flour, white rice etc.
Simple vs Complex Carbohydrates
The major difference between simple and complex carbohydrates is their chemical composition. In case of simple carbohydrates only one or two sugars linked up, while there are three or more sugars linked up to make complex carbohydrates. Another difference is that simple carbohydrates dissolve in our bodies readily in contrast to complex ones, which take longer time to dissolve. Nutritionally, complex carbohydrates are rich as compared to simple ones. Similarly, these two types of carbohydrates are also different in terms of natural as well as refined sources.
