What is the Difference between Fruit and Vegetable
Fruits and vegetables are the two common terms, often use interchangeably. Both are great source of vitamins and fibers. They provide necessary micro and macro nutrients, which are essential for human health. There are different definitions for both, in the dictionary and in common language. There are some fruits, which are used as vegetables and vice versa. In different cultures they are used differently. Different people define vegetables and fruits in different ways; let’s try to know the difference between them.
Fruit
Scientifically speaking, fruit is that part of plant which contains seeds or is a seed itself. It shows its importance in the reproductive system of a plant. The common examples of fruits are apples, oranges, mango etc. Fruits are usually sweet in taste and this sweetness attracts animals to eat them, and these animals play a great role in spreading these seeds to far off areas.
Vegetable
In botanical terms, a vegetable is any edible part of plant, including stems, roots and leaves. According to many scientists fruits are also edible part of plants so we can call them vegetable as well. These statements create confusion, but fruits and vegetables are different in culinary way. Vegetables are less sweet and often grow as short plants or shrubs.
Fruit vs Vegetable
If we discuss the difference between fruits and vegetables, they are just few. Fruits are mostly sweet in taste, while vegetables are not. Fruits are ripen ovaries of a plant, while vegetables are other edible parts of plant. Fruits contain seeds, whereas most of the vegetables do not have seeds. However, few fruits are considered as vegetables, like tomatoes. Similarly, few vegetables are used as fruits like pumpkin. For common people, this classification does not matter; they used fruits and vegetables according to their culture and taste.
