What is the Difference between Within, Amidst, Between, Amongst and Among
In English language, different words are used to compare two or more than two things. Within, Amidst, Between, Amongst and Among are the commonly using words in English language that are used for comparison of different things. However, many people do not pay attention towards use of these words in routine conversation and use any one of these words in place of other word. To clear the concepts of people about these words, here is brief discussion.
Within
“Within” is an adverb that is used to describe something that is present inside or into an area or closed surface.
Amidst
“Amidst” is a preposition that was used in Old English and is used to describe something that is present in the middle or surrounded by something. Today, it has been replaced by “amid”.
Between
“Between” is a preposition that is used to separate two things or for comparison of two different things.
Amongst
The word “Amongst” is a preposition and it was use in old English, just to describe highlight or differentiate one person or one thing from a group of people or group of things.
Among
“Among” is the word that is modern alternate word of “Amongst”. It is also preposition and used to separate one thing from more than two things or a group.
Within vs Amidst vs Between vs Amongst vs Among
All these words are commonly using words of English language, but only “Within” is an adverb in contrast to remaining words “Amidst, Between, Amongst and Among” that are all prepositions. “Within” is used to describe something inside an enclosed area just like “Admist” that was used in Old English and now has been replaced by “Within”. “Between” is used to describe difference between two things in contrast to among that is the comparison of more than two things. “Amongst” has also similar meanings like “Among”, but was used in Old English.
