What is the Difference between Empathy and Sympathy
No matter how many English words look alike or sound alike. The core of these words or the root of those apparently alike words is always different. Same is the case with Empathy and Sympathy. Both might look same but when used they make the whole situation different, which might be more intense or less intense. So it is always wise to know the proper use and difference between the “sound alike” words to explain the situation in a better and more understandable way.
Sympathy
We see people being sympathetic to others in hard times. When someone is really tense, some other will come and show sympathy with that person. What sympathy actually means is that one person feels sorry for some one else. Any person can feel sorry for any other person with or without knowing the exact reason for his sorrow. Many a times, we are not left with many options but to feel sympathy for the people around us, when we see those facing hardships.
Empathy
Empathy means, when a person feels himself with the tensed person. “With “means, when a person feels himself in the place of that person, who undergoes some trouble. This means, that person actually knows how it feels to be in a certain problem. Being empathetic means that you are with the person in the suffering, he is undergoing at that time.
Sympathy vs Empathy
After getting the better idea of what these two expressions mean, we are now able to discuss how they differ from each other. “Feeling for” and “feeling with” is the biggest difference between these two expressions. Being sympathetic is the act of humanity in general, while being empathetic is just more than humanity. People can feel sympathy without knowing the real reason or without knowing the person. But being empathetic means, feeling the trouble just as, another person is actually feeling that pain.
