What is the Difference between College and University
Schools, colleges and universities all are educational institutions, offering education at various levels. In different countries different titles are used for educational institutions. Beside all these, vocational schools and colleges, schools for special people, also exist. However, college and university are the most commonly used words for different educational organizations.
College
In the past the word “college” was used for a group of people, like “college of cardinals”. But, now this term is specifically used for an educational institute, who offer education at degree level. When a student passes out from school, he can get admission in college. Some colleges offer only one type of education, like college of law, college of medicines, college of technical education etc. However, majority of colleges offer various subjects at degree level, and if a student passes out from college, we call him graduate.
University
University is a higher educational organization, as it holds vast research and learning facilities. Usually, many colleges work under the patronage of a university, or they are associated with a particular university and follow the syllabus of that specific university. The spectrum of university is much bigger than school and college, as it offers post graduate programs in almost every subject.
College vs University
They both are educational organizations, but levels are different. College is the intermediate stage between school and university, whereas university is the ultimate educational institution. University offers post graduate courses in a large number of subjects, whereas most of the colleges deal with one particular subject. Universities are independent educational entities, who offer more educational activities as compared to colleges. Rules and regulations are different in colleges and universities. Life in a university is much more responsible and demands hard work, whereas in college one can have liberties to some extent
