What is the Difference between Tonsillitis, Strep Throat and Sore Throat
Throat is a very important part of the human body. However,it is porn to many kinds of infections. There could be more than one reason, behind these infections. We commonly hear tonsillitis, strep throat and sore throat and people often used them interchangeably. These terms are different, have different causes and symptoms. Here we are discussing some key difference between them.
Tonsillitis
Inflammation of the tonsils is called as tonsillitis. Bacteria and virus commonly cause this infection. The common symptoms include sore throat and fever. Other are, headache, chills, swollen lymph nodes and pain in ears. Many patients recover without medication, while others need proper treatment. However, sometimes it leads to severe complications as well.
Strep throat
Strep throat is also called as streptococcal tonsillitis or streptococcal pharyngitis. This is caused by a group of a Streptococcal infection. It affects pharynx and tonsils and sometimes larynx. Symptoms include, fever, sore throat and enlarged lymph nodes. Nearly 35% problems related to throat are strep throat. This spreads with the contact with infected people. Treatment is done according to the symptoms. However, antibiotics are used as a treatment.
Sore throat
Irritation of throat is often called as sore throat. Inflammation of throat is a common symptom, others include trauma and diphtheria. The patient feels severe pain in throat in the majority of cases. It is usually a viral infection. Stomach infections can also lead to sore throat, as stomach acid can accumulate in the throat. Steroids are commonly used as treatment of sore throat.
Tonsillitis vs Strep Throat vs Sore Throat
Tonsillitis is an infection of tonsil glands, which can lead to sore throat. While, strep throat is an infection of larynx, pharynx and tonsil glands. Tonsillitis is caused by viral or bacterial infection and the patient feels swelling and pain in throat. Irritation of the throat is called as sore throat and it is a most common throat problem in humans. Sore throat is also a viral infection. When a sore throat causes by a virus, generally no treatment is required as it will settle in seven to ten days, even without any medication. Strep throat is usually a bacterial infection and associated with severe pain. Almost all these types of throat infection are contagious and can be passed from one person to the other. The symptoms of all these infections are common but treatment varies according to the type of infection.
