What is the Difference between Hyperplasia, Metaplasia, Anaplasia, Dysplasia and Neoplasia
Human body is a complex system of chemical and biological functions. Cell is the basic entity of human body in terms of physical structure. Each and every body cell is important; a single cell can lead to serious diseases. Hyperplasia, Metaplasia, Anaplasia, Dysplasia and Neoplasia are some diseases which are associated with the abnormal behavior of cells. A common person cannot differentiate between these diseases. Here are some common differences between these diseases, which will help you to understand the basic difference between them.
Hyperplasia
Hyperplasia is also called as hypergenesis. This disease is associated with the increase in number of cells. As a result of this disease, an organ can get enlarged. The cells look like normal cells but they are more in number if we compare them with normal human body.
Metaplasia
In metaplasis one cell converts into another cell type. This transformation can be natural or it can be induced by an external stimulus. When a body goes in a new environment, he undergoes such changes. If one type of cells cannot with stand the new environment, they change into other type to face the challenges on the new environment. If the stimulus is no more available, the cells will come into their original type.
Anaplasia
When differentiation of cells gets back to the original cells this situation is called as Anaplasia. The literal meaning of this word means “to form backward” and it is basically the dedifferentiation of cells. This dedifferentiation can be of functions and cell structures or both.
Dysplasia
This term is used for the abnormality of development. This is the overgrowth of immature cells at the location where the number of mature cells is decreasing. This term is particularly used for when cellular abnormality is restricted to the new tissues.
Neoplasia
When cells undergo abnormal growth like metaplasia and dysplasia and if there is abnormal proliferation of cells it is called as Neoplasia. It usually results in tumor which can be cancerous.
Hyperplasia vs Metaplasia vs Anaplasia vs Dysplasia vs Neoplasia
Hyperplasia is the increase in number of cell. Hyperplasia is often confused with Dysplasia but hyperplasia is increase in number of cells while dysplasia is the growth of immature cells. In metaplasia one type of cells convert into another type of cells due to the presence of a stimuli, while anaplsia is the dedifferentiation of cells. Neoplasia is the next stage which happens after metaplasia or dysplasia. In metaplasia when stimulus is removed cells can get back to the original state while in all others cells cannot get back to the original phase.
