What is the Difference between Townhouse, Coop, Pud Home, Condo and Apartment

When we talk about house, we hear different terms used in similar meaning, for instance townhouse, condo, apartment and many others. All these are different from each other but commonly we use them interchangeably.  Here we are discussing differences between them.

Town house

This term come from United Kingdom, and now a day this is used generally for terraced house. However, meanings vary from country to country.

Coop

A coop or cooperative housing consists of more than one residential unit. Each shareholder occupies one housing unit, under the specified rules and regulations.

Pud home

Pud stands for planned Unit development. This is a single family residence which is part of a neighborhood. A person owns this house, but he has to pay for community services as well, like for the maintenance of parks and other community areas.

Condo

Condo is the short form of condominium, which is owned by an individual. However, access to common facilities like heating systems, elevators and hallways is controlled by association of owners.

Apartment

Apartment of flat is a self contained housing unit that is situated in a small part of a large building. Apartment may be owned by the occupier or rented by the owner.

Town house vs Coop vs Pud home vs Condo vs Apartment

These are different types of housing with little differences. Townhouse and condo is legally the same thing, but they differ in their structure or building style. A town house and Pud home looks like an independent house while condo and apartment are part of a big building. In case of town house and condo, owners association has a important role to play as they tale care the common services. Coop is also like condo, where owner has to pay for community services.
