What is the Difference between Idps, Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Immigrants
In a civil society not only the local citizens are important but many other people like immigrants and refugees are also part of it. Many terms are used in this regard, like internally displaced people or idps, refugees and immigrants. All these terms are different and here we are describing the difference between them.
Idps
When a person is forced to live his home, but he remains within the borders of his country, we call him Idp. In legal terms they are not refugees, but they are deprived of their basic rights. Maximum number of Idps resides in Africa.
Asylum Seekers
When a person leaves his country, but he is not accepted as a refugee by the other country, we call him as asylum seeker. The decision of providing refuge depends on host country’s policies. Asylum seekers will not have his rights, unless he gets immigration or status of refugee.
Refugees
When a person suffers in his homeland on the basics of race, religion or political opinion, he can ask for asylum in another country. If he gets asylum, he is called as refugee. A person may ask for refuge due to war or violence as well.
Immigrants
When a person leaves his own country and come to another country for permanent residence, he is called as immigrant. Reason for immigration could be any, like political, economical, or natural disaster.
Idps vs Asylum Seekers vs Refugees vs Immigrants
All these terms are used interchangeably but actually they are different. Idps are those people which are forced to leave their home place, but they live inside their home country. On the other hand, all other are different form of residing in other countries. When a person leaves his country for a reason and wants to seek refuge in other country but he is not accepted there, he is called as asylum seeker and when he gets refuge, he is called as refugee. Immigrants are those people who reside in another country, on permanent basic, legally.
