What is the Difference between Epic Folklore Folktale Mythology Myth Legend
There are different terms are used to describe old stories or poems like myth, epic, legend, folktale and folklore. They are all different from each other in much respect, but some don’t realize the difference between them. Let’s have a look on difference between them.
Epic
It is a term used for a lengthy and narrative poem, which concern with a serious subject. An epic poem describes the heroic deeds and events which show the significance of a nation or cultural. An oral poetry is a type of an epic.
Folklore
It is also known as lore. It consists of many things like oral history, music, popular beliefs and proverbs which are the tradition of a group, culture oar subculture. This term was first used by William Thomas.
Mythology
It is a term used for study of different myths with in a culture or different cultures. It may be a study of a collection of myths. For example, Greek mythology describes the body of myths from the ancient Greeks.
Myth
It is a term used for a story which may be true or false. They are very old. Myths do not have any record of their origin. Myths found in all types of cultures.
Legend
The term legend describes the narratives about human action. This human action perceived by both teller and listener in human history.
Folktale
It is also a traditional story which is not considered as true or sacred in society. It can be easily set at any time or any where.
Epic vs Folklore vs Folktale vs Mythology vs Myth vs Legend
The difference between an epic and folklore is, epic is a lengthy narrative poem which is concerned with serious subjects and describes the deeds of a culture. While folklore or lore is consist of different things like history, popular beliefs of a culture which relates to the tradition of that culture. Difference between myth and mythology is, myth is a traditional story which may be false or true. While mythology is study of myths. Difference between legend and folktale is, legend is a traditional story which is true, while folktales are not recognized as true in human society. They can not be set at any time or any where.
