What is the Difference between Mink Polecat Weasel Stoat Ferret and Mongoose
Our world is filled with amazing animals. Some animals are carnivores, some are herbivores and some are omnivores. Here our topic of discussion is some strange specie of carnivore animals. Mink Polecat Weasel Stoat Ferret and Mongoose are the names of some carnivore animals that look alike and have many resemblances. However, as clear from the names, they are different types of animals and exhibit different attitude and living style. Here are some differences between these types of animals.
Mink
Mink is the name of animal that is dark-colored carnivorous. It belongs to family Mustelidae and genus Mustela. These are semi-aquatic mammals and categorized into two species named; American Mink and European Mink. The fur of Mink is considered very precious as a popular stuff for making clothing.
Polecat
Polecat is the carnivorous animal that belongs to Mutelid family and very small mammals. The description of Polecat is small dark brown body with dark circle around the face and yellow underbody. Rats and small birds are the common diets of Polecat.
Weasel
Weasels again belong to Mustelidae family and characterized as small carnivore mammals. They have short slim body with average length 30 cm and long tail with average length 10 cm. they have brownish-red fur with white belly and believed very clever animals.
Stoat
Stoats are also a member of Mustelidae family and omnivorous mammals. They have much longer tail and elongated neck. The color of skin from outer portion including head is sandy-brown, but white at the bottom.
Ferret
Ferrot is also a family member of Mustelidae and carnivorous mammal. The average length of Ferret is 50 cm with tail length 13 cm. the fur color of Ferret is somewhat mixed like black, brown and white. Male ferrets are much larger than female ferrets.
Mongoose
Mongoose is a group of small carnivorous mammals with 33 different specie. They belong to family Herpestidae. They vary in length according to specie like from 1-4 feet. They are characterized as predators with long slim body and long tapered tail.
Mink vs Polecat vs Weasel vs Stoat vs Ferret vs Mongoose
All Mink Polecat Weasel Stoat and Ferret belong to same family called Mustelidae. However, Mongoose belongs to different family named as Herpestidae. Stoats are similar to Weasels but distinguished easily due to their larger bodies and black-tipped long tail. Ferret has much resemblance with Polecat but can be differentiated due to dimorphic appearance. The most differentiating thing among all these predators is that, they have different color of fur especially from upper part of body. Moreover, they have different tail lengths with some distinguishing marks like some have tipped tail, some tapered and some straight with no mark.
