What is the Difference between Bison and Buffalo

Bison and buffalo are two large mammals, which belong to same family but are two different species. Bison are also called American buffalo, which creates confusion between Bison and buffalo. However, they two are different animals found at different geological locations and have different characteristics.

Bison

Bison is 6 feet tall animal, which is almost 10 feet long. It has shaggy coat, which sheds in summers. Its horns are very short and bend backwards or sideway. It is found in America, Mexico and Canada. Americans were use to hunt them, but during 19th century then get the status of endangered species, due to excessive hunting. Later, it is domesticated by few people to save the species, now we can find them in large bison farms, created for tourists’ attraction.

Buffalo

 Buffalo is the large animal, its size is equal to bison, but differs in appearance. With large horns this animal has black shinny coat, with long tail. It is found in Asia and Africa and has long history of domestication. There are two types of buffalo, Cape buffalo and water buffalo. People keep it as a source of milk and other related products. Sometimes it is used for meat as well, but that is not common. 

Bison vs Buffalo

 Two large mammals, which belong two same family but genera and species, are different. Both are same in size but Bison has shaggy coat and Buffalo has black shinny coat. Buffalo has long horns while horns are small in bison. Buffalo is found in Asia and Africa, whereas Bison is native to America and Canada.  Bison is hunted in the past but buffalo has long history of domestication. Buffalo provides milk and other products to its owner. Both animals are very important in their respective culture.
