What is the Difference between JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, ICO and GIF
Digital images are available in the form of vectors or pixels but some images have combination of both forms means vector and pixels. To store and organize these digital images, different image file formats are used. JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, ICO and GIF are the different types of image file formats that are being used to store and organize digital images. Let’s see the difference between these image file formats.
JPEG
JPEG or “Joint Photographic Expert Group” is the method of compressing data by losing something from digital image. It is the losing compression method for storing and organizing digital images and saves the images with file extension .jpg.
PNG
PNG or “Portable Network Graphic” is a file format for storing digital images but in true colors. it can support the large images without disturbing uniformly colored areas. it can support both lossless and lossy format for editing and storing images. It has file extension .png.
TIFF
TIFF or “Tagged Image File Format” stores digital images with .tif file extension. It is also suitable for both lossy and lossless images, but best for lossless compression. For 24-bit and 48-bit graphics, it can save 8-bit or 16-bit per color.
BMP
BMP or Windows Bitmap is file format for Microsoft Windows graphic files. Being uncompressed, BMP are relatively larger and easy to handle file format for any Windows OS.
ICO
ICO is a typical file format in Microsoft Windows for managing small computer icons. You can see ICO files in Windows OS various sizes and different color depths as well. Moreover, we can scale ICO files very easily.
GIF
GIF or “Graphic Interchange Format” is the file format that is highly suitable for those digital images, having a few colors. In fact, this file format can support only 256 colors or 8-bit palette. FIF file formats are relatively good for creating image animation effects.
JPEG vs PNG vs TIFF vs BMP vs ICO vs GIF
No doubt, all JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, ICO and GIF are the types of file formats for storing and managing digital images, but their use and file extensions are much different. JPEG can support only lossy compression in contrast to PNG that is suitable for both lossy and lossless format. TIFF is best for lossless compression. Similarly, GIF can support only 256 colors and best for creating animation effects. While, BMP and CIO are purely Windows file formats, in which BMP is used for supporting large images in contrast to ICO that is used for supporting small computer icons.
