What is the Difference between Equation and Expression
No doubt, equation and expression are true mathematical relations. However, both of these relations have much resemblance in their written style. Usually, this similarity creates high confusion in terms of understanding the basic mathematical concepts, especially for students. To clear the difference between these equation and expression, here is some comprehensive description.
Equation
A mathematical relation that contains not only rational number, but also give look just like a sentence is called equation. In fact, if we want to equate two expressions, the only mathematical way is equation. An equation is such sentence, which must contain an equal sign. This means, an equation has ability to provide a satisfactory answer by equating two expressions. For example,
If 3(X-5) = 6, Then 3X- 15 = 6
And 3X= 21, So X= 7
In this example, 3(X-5) =6 is an equation.
Expression
An expression is not a complete mathematical sentence, but a part of it as well. You can say that an expression is a phrase. It does not contain an equal sign and due to this reason, we cannot find an answer just for an individual expression. For example,
3(X-5)-6 is an expression, we cannot simplify it without putting the value of X. if we take the value of X as 20, then by simplifying 3(20-5)-6, we will get 27.
Equation vs Expression
Obviously, the crystal clear difference between equation and expression is inclusion and exclusion of equality sign respectively. However, some a technical difference between these two mathematical relations is that we can solve an equation rather expression. We have no other option for an expression except simplifying it. Moreover, an expression has no rational number, which is mandatory for an equation. Similarly, we must need the value of unknown to simplify the expression. On the contrary, in case of solving equation, our ultimate aim is to find the value of unknown.
