What is the Difference between Fiance and Fiancee
Fiancé and fiancée are the two words that are most often confused and are often used interchangeably. Actually they are not same. Though they are used to describe one thing but then they are different in their use and meaning. These are the two nouns of French language. In French, nouns are used for males and females separately unlike many nouns used for both the genders alike and as one. English has borrowed many words from French and few from Spanish too. Thus there are many words that are actually French in origin but are used in English too because they do not have any synonym in English. Below is given difference between fiancé and fiancée.
Fiancé
Fiancé is French word which is used to describe a male who is engaged to a female officially but not married yet. Officially may not look justified in today’s age because many couples who are not officially engaged also call engaged. But the true use of the word fiancé is only when a male is actually engaged to a female.
Fiancée
Fiancée is the French word that is used for a female who is engaged. This noun has been derived from fiancé which literally means promise. In its turn, the word fiancé has been derived from the Spanish word fidere which means trust. Thus this relationship was given the name keeping in mind its purpose and its base.
Fiancé vs fiancée
Both are nouns in French language but have different use even though they refer to the same relation. Fiancé is noun for male while fiancée is noun for female. The root word id fiancé from which fiancée was derived. The actual word fiancé was derived from Spanish word fidere. Thus the first noun was fiancé and the noun fiancée came later to take its place.
