There are many identical words in English vocabulary. Though these words sound same but their meaning as well as their use is different. Than and then are the words lie in the same category. They sound alike so mostly they are used in the sentences in others place hence the meaning of the sentence changes. To understand the meaning and use of then and than, we must first know what makes them different.
Than
Than is the word used in the sentence where we are meant to compare two things, to put it differently, we use “than” where we have to compare the nature, characteristics, functioning or any other traits of two things. This word does not have its self meaning, but its use makes the comparative sentences meaningful.
For example: “Mary looks thinner than before”
Then
Then is the word used in the sentences where we need to show the time constraint in the sentence or we if we need to show the events in sequence in the sentence, we use it. There is not self meaning of then as such, but without using it, the overall sentence becomes meaningless. This word connects the events and the two different sentences by giving them meaning.
Example: “if you think, you are going to hide yourself from police then you should correct your thoughts at once”
Than vs Then
The first difference between the two words is their spelling. Both have the third letter different. This difference shows their difference overall. The second difference is the use of the words. Than is used to compare and then is used to link the events with respect to time and it is also used to show the time constraint in the sentences.
