What is the Difference between Imap and Pop
Electronic mail or email took the control of the world in no time. People used to write letters and other important documents, books etc with their hands. But now with the introduction of email service the hand written letters are now a part of history. Businesses, friends, family, everyone uses different email websites to send emails. Emails are run by different protocols. Two of them are IMAP and POP. These protocols are designed for work places.
Imap
Internet message access protocol is the protocol which displays the messages on the personal computer when inbox is accessed. With Imap, the messages are actually placed on mail server but they are shown on pc. Imap is just like a window on server through which messages can be seen but can’t be transferred to the personal computer.
Pop
Post office protocol is the protocol that gives access to the email server to check the messages through personal computer in such a way that it locates for new messages. Download them in the inbox on the personal computer and then deletes them from the server. In this way, the previous messages are removed from the email server.
Imap vs Pop
With Imap emails can be accessed from anywhere from any computer or system because it leaves emails on the server. While in Pop, the emails are downloaded to the system they are accessed from and they are removed from the mail server. Imap does not make multiple copies of emails in the server while Pop does when it is set on “saving the copy” settings.
Imap gives the option to keep local copies of the mails, which Pop does not give. With Imap, the email’s backups are maintained and saved every night, in Pop there is no such option. This gives the relief of accessing the record during system failure or virus attacks, in Imap.
