What is the Difference between Genotype and Phenotype
Human’s information is all hidden in his genes. Genes are not just micro-organisms but they have every information about us , what we do, why the eye color we have is brown or black, why our hair are not like or like our parents, and most interestingly why we sometimes, look alike our grandparents. This is all what genes actually are. They are studied in two classed, genotype and phenotype, let’s see what they are.
Genotype
Genotype is the study of the genes that a living being carries inside it. Genotype determines the types of traits a living being (phenotype) has. With genotype it is determined what kind of diseases a person is susceptible to or what is his sex based on XX or XY chromosomes etc. similarly, the development of the human body in a specific way is also determined by genotype. To sum up its genotype that contains all information about the phenotype.
Phenotype
It can never be well defined without knowing about the genotype. If genotype is the complete set of genes then the phenotype is the expression of the gene-carrying organism. Phenotypes depend on the genes they carry. In fact phenotypes adopt their expressions by their surroundings as well. They cannot be completely defined by the genotype because if we take the example of humans for instance, then we modify our behavior with the demands or needs of the surroundings. Similarly, if genotype observes the susceptibility of diseases, phenotype determines its symptoms.
Genotype vs Phenotype
Though both Genotype and Phenotype are interrelated terms, but they have vast differences. If genotypes decide the genetic traits phenotype decided as what actually these traits are i.e. how much the behavior is modified due to the surroundings. For example, lions are built to kill but if they stay for long time in cages, they forget to hunt. Genotypes, thus decide the inherited genes, while phenotype are determined by the environment. The simplest example is the complexion change in a person, when he moves from one area to another.
