What is the Difference between Duodenum, Jejunum and Ileum
The role of the small intestine in human beings is of much importance. It is the part of the body which directly connects with the stomach and play a major role in the absorption and digestion of food particles. With respect to length, small intestine caries fromĀ male to female. In a male, the average length of the small intestine is 9.9 meters which is a bit smaller than female in which its average length is 7.1 meters. We can see and analyze the small intestine in three parts which are called Duodenum, Jejunum and Ileum. A normal person cannot distinguish these three parts of small intestine with respect to structure, but there are some differences in these parts which are as follows.
1. Duodenum
The duodenum is the first or initial part of the small intestine, which connects with the stomach. This part is very short in length with 25-38 cm and its construction are just like a hollow tube. Generally, the function of Duodenum is absorption of iron. However, when we see in depth, this part of small intestine release mucus to break down the food particles. Another key role of Duodenum is deciding the emptying rate of stomach by means of hormonal pathways. It can be further divided into four parts with shape of three parts as C-Loop curve.
2. Jejunum
The second or middle part of the small intestine is Jejunum. The average length of jejunum is 2.5 meters. In fact, before reaching the digested food particles into jejunum in the form of amino acid, fatty acid, vitamins and minerals, they become so small to soak into villi of this middle part of the small intestine and ultimately drop into the blood stream. With the help of special circular folds or plicae circulars in its submucusa, jejunum has much capacity to absorb all nutrients.
3. Ileum
The ileum is the final or third part of the small intestine. The length of ileum is 2-4 meters and its function is to absorb bite salts, vitamin B and remaining digested food particles that do not absorb in the jejunum.
Duodenum vs Jejunum vs Ileum
All three parts of the small intestine Duodenum, Jejunum and Ileum are not different from each other in terms of structure, but with respect to function as well. The major difference is that, Duodenum is responsible for absorption of hard particles like iron particles in contrast to the function of jejunum in which absorption of fully digested carbohydrates and fully digested protein take place. However, in ileum absorption of remaining non-absorbed particles take place.
