What is the Difference between Mahi Mahi, Shark, Whale, Dolphin and Porpoise
There are countless fish species living in the sea and ocean world. Some are small and some are large. Similarly, there are many types of fishes that look alike in terms of appearance and habits. Sometimes it becomes difficult to distinguish between them just on behalf of their physical appearance. Mahi Mahi, Shark, Whale, Dolphin and Porpoise are the names of some large fish species that are found in oceans and seas. Here is the difference between these similar looking fish species.
Mahi Mahi
Mahi Mahi that is also known as common dolphin fish or Dorado is the type of fish that lives in off-shores waters of tropical and temperate zones. The average weight of Mahi Mahi is 13 kg that ranges up to not more than 15 kg. It is carnivorous and fastest growing fish. These are colorful fish with golden colors at their sides as well as blue and green on the back. They give various color shades out of water in the sunlight.
Shark
Shark is a renowned fish type that lives in deep water below the depth 6000 feet. There are almost 400 shark species all over the world and one of its specie “whale Shark” is the largest fish with the length up to 40 feet. Shark is carnivorous fish and is considered much intelligent fish. It can swim with bursts up to 20 km per hours in case of attacking.
Whale
Whale is fish-like marine animal with very large body structure. It’s one specie that is called blue whale is truly considered as largest mammal in the world with length up to 98 feet and weight up to 180 tones. The term whale is also used for some large fish types like for some dolphin and porpoise species. Whale is also carnivorous and its food ranges from micro-organisms to large fish species. Scientists have discovered very positive effect of Whale hump on fish productivity.
Dolphin
Dolphin is a famous marine mammal that lives in shallow seas. There are more than 40 known species of dolphins and their length ranges from 4-30 feet with body weight 40 kg-10 tones. They are carnivorous animals and famous for their intelligence and friendly and playful behavior with human beings.
Porpoise
Porpoise is just dolphins but smaller in length and having round heads with blunt jaws and spade shaped teeth. They mostly line near the shores of all seas and oceans. There are six known species of porpoise. They are also carnivorous and exhibit a little bit gymnastic and less friendly behavior.

The most distinguishing feature of Mahi Mahi from these large marine animals is that, it is colorful as compared to all others discussed animals like shark, whale, dolphin and porpoise. However, shark is a fighter, clever, intelligent and most dangerous fish specie than all others. its one specie “whale shark” is the largest fish unlike Blue Whale that is a specie of whale and the largest animal in the world. Whale has clear difference from others with its huge body structure and hum on back. Dolphin and porpoise are much similar looking marine animals. However, dolphin has a beak unlike porpoise that has just spade-shaped moth with blunt jaws. Moreover, dolphins are much larger as well as more acrobatic than porpoise.
