What is the Difference between Mass and Weight
Every material thing in this universe has physical and chemical properties. Out of the physical properties of these objects, mass and weight are of key importance. They generally tell us that how heavy an object is and is also helpful in negotiation of these objects like selling or buying.
Mass
It is the intrinsic property of a body and it is the amount of matter present in a body. Mass of an object is always constant at any place like earth as well as on Moon. Mass is a scalar quantity. It doesn’t need any direction to describe itself. The standard unit of Mass in the SI system is kilogram (kg) other units such as gram (g) milligram (mg) are also used. Mass is measured by using an ordinary balance. Mass is independent of any external force. The formulae for calculating mass is M= F/A
Weight
Weight is the force by which earth attracts an object towards itself due to its gravitational pull. The weight of an object is not always the same on every place. You can say that weight of a body has different value on earth and moon. Weight is a vector quantity and it is always in the direction of gravitational force. The standard unit of weight is Newton (N). Weight is measured by using spring balance. Formulae for calculating weight is W=mg
Mass vs Weight
The main difference between mass and weight is that mass is a scalar quantity whereas weight is a vector quantity. The other difference between them is that mass is same everywhere while weight doesn’t remain the same. Mass is measured in kilograms while Newton is used to measure weight. The most notable difference between mass and weight is that mass can never be zero while weight can be zero. Similarly, mass is an independent quantity while weight depends upon gravitational force of earth.
