What is the Difference between Maternity Leave and Parental Leave
At present, both mother and father have to do work for supporting their families. However, child birth is also common thing that does not depend upon job of mother and even father. All countries across the globe respect this critical period especially for mothers and facilitate them by giving paid or unpaid leave. So, Maternity leave and Parental leave mean such leave that a mother or in some countries father as well, take for better growth of their child. Let’s see the difference between Maternity Leave and parental Leave.
Maternity Leave
Maternity Leave is essentially associated with the birth of child and start just after the birth time of baby. Maternity leaves are typically paid leaves and give to mother of child. The rules for duration and paid or unpaid matter of maternity leaves are different in various countries. However, normally Maternity leaves are paid leaves and span over a time-period of 6 months to one year in most of the countries.
Parental Leave
Parental leaves are associated with the care of newly born child and both father and mother are eligible to apply for such leave in most countries. There are many variations in laws about parental leaves. In some countries, parental leaves are paid but for a certain time. in these countries, such leaves are extendable but with unpaid status. However, in some countries, parental leaves only have unpaid status and also fixed time limit that is not more than 2 years.
Maternity Leave vs Parental Leave
There are many differences between maternity leave and parental leave. The major and crystal clear difference is that, maternity leaves start from the time of child birth in contrast to parental leaves that can be availed after some time of child birth after passing the duration of maternity leaves. Moreover, maternity leaves are essentially paid leaves and associated with mothers. However, parental leaves could be paid and unpaid and anyone parent can avail this opportunity in most countries. Similarly, the time period for maternity leave is not more than one year in most countries. However, by availing the opportunity of unpaid parental leave, one can go for leave even more than 2-3 years.
